Is Surveying the Career for You?

Since its beginnings circa 2,700 B.C., land surveying has continued to be a pivotal and flourishing profession in 2025. If you have been searching for a career that allows for integrating intellect with physical work, land surveying is an often-overlooked industry that offers significant career stability. Below are just a few reasons to consider surveying as a long-term career:

Outdoor Work Environment

Land surveyors spend most of their time working outdoors on large land development projects and construction sites. While the job can be physically demanding, most surveyors prefer working in diverse terrain and in new places frequently.

Strong Math & Analytical Skills

Surveying requires strong math skills, particularly geometry and trigonometry, to perform measurements, calculations, and analyze data. Individuals that prefer an analytical element to their work find surveying appealing.

Problem Solving Skills

Interpreting measurements and solving problems related to property boundaries or construction layout are just some of the puzzles surveyors are solving every day in the field.

Surveying Technology is Always Evolving

While some traditional surveying methods can’t be replaced, modern surveyors utilize GPS, drones, scanners, and specialized software to collect the most accurate data.

Surveying is a Career

Entry-level positions like Rodman/Instrument Operator are available to learn the basics of surveying with no previous experience. Opportunities for growth include promotion to a Crew Chief and leading your own survey crew, or becoming a Professional Licensed Surveyor recognized by the state licensing board. Some surveyors further develop their skill sets by training in utility location, CAD drafting, or becoming a licensed drone pilot.

The land surveying industry continues to experience steady growth due to the continued momentum of the construction and land development industries. As long as properties are bought and sold, they will need to be mapped. As new construction continues and natural resources need to be tracked, land surveyors will have a critical and secure profession.
